Classroom: An Evidence Based Program for Children with Special Needs Anne Buckley-Reen, OTR/RYT COURSE CALENDAR & REGISTRATION INFO Course Description: This NEW 2 day course offers the school based therapist 4 researched routines utilizing a comprehensive group yoga program in an accessible format for children of all abilities. "Get Ready To Learn" was developed by yoga teacher and occupational therapist, Anne Buckley-Reen. "Get Ready To Learn" provides a daily therapeutic classroom routine designed to address problems with self regulation, attention, motor planning, auditory processing and motor performance. Developed for the NYC Department of Education and implemented in classrooms during the 2008-09 school year, this program has been highly acclaimed by participating teachers, principals and administrators throughout the city. Teachers have documented positive changes in behaviors, with over 95% reporting that their students are consistantly calmer and are more focused following the program. In addition, teachers and therapists have reported changes in language, motor and sensory processing and parents have reported positive changes in sleep, eating and transitions. Anne Buckley Reen, OTR, RYT has 29 years of experience in pediatrics and is the presenter of the popular workshop “Yoga Therapy For the Child With Developmental Challenges”. Known for her work with therapeutic yoga, Anne was asked to develop a classroom curriculum for the largest special education program in the country. The program\, which was introduced in 2008-09, has received high ratings from all involved classroom staff. Barbara Joseph, NYC School Administrator and GRTL program facilitator states: “The impact of implementing the "Get Ready to Learn" program across our entire district with students with significant disabilities ages 3-21 over the past year has had tremendous results in decreasing behaviors that interfere with learning and increasing appropriate behaviors to enhance each student’s ability to learn more effectively. Teachers, administrators, students and parents have reported significant changes in both the classroom environment as well as student performance. Parents are reporting that their children are reacting to their environment in ways they haven’t demonstrated in the past. At the onset of the program we knew that the daily implementation of this movement program would have a positive impact on student progress but the data is reporting gains beyond our original expectations.” The program is designed for all populations including students with multiple handicaps, developmental disabilities, and autistic spectrum disorders. The program has been tested with students ages 4 through high school in self contained classrooms throughout NYC and is now available to therapists around the country. Program includes: Specific routines that incorporate sound, breath work, yoga postures, and deep relaxation techniques adapted for the specific challenges of various disabilities. Each routine is designed to be implemented in a sequential approach… modeling, minimal prompt and assisted performance. The program can be supervised by therapists and implemented by the classroom teacher to provide a daily preparatory therapeutic program. The program includes 2 seated and 2 floor routines designed to start the classroom day.
